Funding a major garden makeover

If you are planning to make major changes to your garden, such as adding a greenhouse or a patio, it is going to cost you a fair amount of money to do so. If you are prepared to wait a while, the best way to do this from a financial perspective is to save up the money in a high interest savings account. However, if you do not want to wait, then you are going to have to borrow the money from somewhere. There are essentially three ways to borrow money from private lenders: credit cards, personal loans, and secured loans.

If you aren’t spending more than a couple of thousand pounds, and it is possible to pay for your garden enhancements with a credit card, then a credit card could be the answer. Some cards come with a zero percent introductory period, so if you can pay it off within this time, you might not have to pay any interest at all. However, if you only pay off the minimum amount each month, it will take a very long time indeed to pay off the loan, and by that time you will have probably paid for it several times over in interest payments.

Personal loans are loans that do not require the borrower to put up their home as collateral. Their main advantage over credit cards is that the repayments are fixed, so you will have a definite date when the loan will be paid off. Also, you will receive the loan amount in the form of a cash lump sum that you can do anything you like with. However, the interest rates tend to be higher than you would have to pay with any other type of loan. Also, the lender will perform a credit check to see what your history of debt repayments is like, so if you have a patchy credit record, you may not be offered very favourable terms, if you are offered a loan at all.

Secured loans are loans against the value of your home, so that if you fail to make repayments, the lender can repossess your home in order to recover the money that they loaned to you. However, the loan amounts tend to be higher, and the interest payments lower, than with any other type of loan, so if you are prepared to take the risk, it is definitely the most cost effective way of borrowing a large sum of money.
